# A Deep Dive into Precompiles

Technical Overview of Precompiles

Precompiles are system-level contracts embedded directly into the Avalanche L1 protocol. Unlike traditional Solidity smart contracts, which are executed within the EVM runtime, precompiles invoke native Go functions, providing access to low-level operations that are gas-efficient and optimized for performance.

#### 📌 What Are Precompiles?

Precompiles serve as a bridge between Solidity and the underlying protocol logic, enabling developers to:

* Interact with blockchain features not natively supported in Solidity
* Execute operations like native token minting, permission changes, and governance role management
* Achieve faster execution with reduced gas costs

They are defined at specific addresses and behave like standard contracts from the perspective of the EVM but are implemented and handled directly by the Avalanche node software.

{% hint style="danger" %}
You must define precompiles during chain initialization in the genesis configuration.
{% endhint %}

To know more about precompile, refer this [documentation link](https://build.avax.network/docs/avalanche-l1s/evm-configuration/evm-l1-customization#precompiles)

# Inter-Chain Communication

Relayer Overview

The relayer command suite provides a robust set of tools for deploying, configuring, and managing IBC-compatible relayers within the Interchain Messaging (ICM) framework.

\
The ICM Relayer is a lightweight, event-driven service that continuously monitors designated source blockchains for Warp message events. Upon detecting such an event, the relayer initiates a process to transmit the message to the intended destination blockchain. It does this by querying validator nodes on the source chain for their individual BLS signatures on the Warp message. These signatures are then aggregated into a single BLS multi-signature, which is subsequently embedded in a transaction. This transaction is constructed according to the destination chain's virtual machine (VM) rules for Warp message verification. This enables seamless, secure, and decentralized interchain token transfers and message passing—without relying on application-layer coordination.

<figure><img src="/files/LKjnTzOAQHSmOkdxz1NZ" alt=""><figcaption><p>Data Flow</p></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="success" %}
To know more about Relayer, refer this link - [Relayer](https://github.com/ava-labs/icm-services/blob/main/relayer/README.md)
{% endhint %}

You can also find it under the Integration tab.

> <mark style="color:red;">**Once the user deploys a network, this tab will become available, allowing them to request this integration for their network. Our team will then assist with the setup and support as needed.**</mark>

# RPC Access

RPC Endpoint

An RPC endpoint (Remote Procedure Call) access allows developers, wallets, and dApp to interact with the blockchain network, querying data, sending transactions, and deploying contracts.

The primary rpc endpoint of the demo network is available at [RPC endpoint](https://rpc-cogitusdemonetwork.zeeve.net/SIp4Xce0n12yTrBPxA/ext/bc/h49dwEVWNSoUmpwtFtfBJVrtKN4Y6wFhAE2rXNZeWYoFRYQHJ/rpc).

# About Avalanche L1

<details>

<summary><strong>What is an Avalanche L1, and how does it differ from a Subnet?</strong></summary>

An Avalanche L1 (Layer-1) is a standalone blockchain within the Avalanche network. It operates with its own rules, validators, and execution layer, designed to meet specific project or industry needs. These blockchains are independent but can communicate with other Avalanche L1s, providing flexibility and scalability.

<mark style="color:green;">**Avalanche L1s vs. Subnets:**</mark>

Subnets initially offered customization for blockchains on Avalanche. However, Avalanche L1s represent a more advanced approach, delivering greater control and customization. They enable the creation of specialized blockchains within the Avalanche ecosystem, offering tailored solutions for diverse applications and industries while ensuring interoperability.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>Why choose Avalanche for building a custom L1 chain?</strong></summary>

Avalanche offers low latency, high throughput, and fast finality. It is ideal for launching
&#x20;high-performance chains with full sovereignty.
&#x20;Avalanche L1s offer a compelling solution for building custom blockchains because they
&#x20;focus on scalability, customization, and performance.

<mark style="color:green;">**Scalability & Performance:**</mark> \
L1s enable horizontal scaling, preventing congestion from other
&#x20;chains and allowing for higher transaction throughput (TPS) and sub-second finality by
&#x20;providing dedicated resources.

<mark style="color:green;">**Extreme Customization:**</mark> \
You gain extensive control over your blockchain, including defining
&#x20;your own gas token, managing validator sets (even permissioned ones for compliance),&#x20;
customizing the EVM, and implementing tailored privacy controls and governance rules.
\
Interoperability & Ecosystem: Avalanche L1s are designed for native interoperability
&#x20;through Avalanche Warp Messaging (AWM), facilitating seamless communication. They also
&#x20;offer Ethereum (EVM) compatibility, making development easier, and benefit from a
&#x20;growing ecosystem in DeFi, GameFi, and enterprise solutions.

<mark style="color:green;">**Enterprise & Institutional Suitability:**</mark> \
The high degree of customization allows for
&#x20;regulatory compliance (e.g., KYC/AML) and provides reliability and security essential for
&#x20;mission-critical applications, often supported by dedicated infrastructure providers.
&#x20;In essence, Avalanche L1s are ideal for projects demanding high performance, specific
&#x20;configurations, isolation from public chain traffic, and a strong ecosystem, making them
&#x20;suitable for various advanced decentralized applications and enterprise solutions.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>How does Avalanche’s consensus mechanism work?</strong></summary>

Avalanche L1s (including the C-Chain, P-Chain, and custom Subnets) utilize the Snowman
&#x20;Consensus Protocol, a linearized Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mechanism designed for high
\
throughput and fast finality. It also allows for customizable security and compliance for
\
enterprise-grade solutions.

</details>

<details>

<summary><strong>How does an Avalanche L1 compare with Cosmos SDK or rollups?</strong></summary>

An Avalanche L1 offers full chain sovereignty and faster deployment compared to
\
Cosmos SDK or Rollups, with lower latency, stronger tooling, and a leaner, more efficient
\
stack. This results in significantly lower infrastructure costs, making it more economical to
\
launch and operate than a comparable Cosmos SDK chain or Rollup.
